Never flush expired amoxicillin down the toilet or drain. This contaminates water supplies.
Instead, mix the amoxicillin with an undesirable substance, like used coffee grounds or kitty litter. This makes the medication less appealing to children or pets.
Seal the mixture tightly in a sealed, opaque container–a zip-top bag inside a sealed plastic bottle works well.
Dispose of the sealed container in your household trash. Check with your local waste management authority for specific instructions in your area; some communities have medication take-back programs.
Always keep medications out of reach of children and pets.
For large quantities of expired medication, contact your local pharmacy or healthcare provider for guidance on safe disposal.
