Dosage and Administration of Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin dosage depends heavily on the infection being treated, the patient’s age and weight, and their kidney function. Always follow your doctor’s prescription precisely.

Amoxicillin is typically administered orally, either as a capsule, tablet, or liquid suspension. For optimal absorption, take it with a full glass of water.

For adults with mild to moderate infections: Common dosages range from 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours. For adults with severe infections: Higher doses, up to 1000mg every 8 hours or 1500mg every 12 hours, may be prescribed. For children: The dosage is calculated based on weight, usually 20-40 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8-12 hours. Always consult your pediatrician for the correct child dosage.

Several factors can influence dosage and administration:

Kidney function: Patients with impaired kidney function may require a reduced dose to prevent drug accumulation. Type of infection: Treatment duration varies based on the infection’s severity. Some infections require longer treatment courses than others. Concomitant medications: Interactions with other medications are possible, so always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.

Complete the entire course of amoxicillin, even if you start feeling better. Stopping early could lead to treatment failure and potentially antibiotic resistance.

If you experience any side effects, such as allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling), diarrhea, or nausea, contact your doctor immediately.
