Drug Interactions with Doxycycline: What to Avoid

Avoid taking doxycycline with antacids containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron. These minerals reduce doxycycline absorption, making the medication less effective.

Dairy products, like milk and yogurt, can also hinder doxycycline absorption. Space your doxycycline dose at least two hours away from dairy consumption.

Certain medications interact negatively with doxycycline. This includes warfarin (a blood thinner), which doxycycline can intensify, increasing bleeding risk. Consult your doctor before combining them.

Similarly, doxycycline may interact with oral contraceptives, potentially reducing their effectiveness. Discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor while taking doxycycline.

Do not combine doxycycline with methotrexate, as it can increase the toxicity of methotrexate. This combination requires close medical supervision.

Finally, be aware that doxycycline may increase the photosensitivity of your skin, making you more susceptible to sunburn. Use sunscreen and protective clothing while taking it.
