Administer Lasix intravenously slowly, over at least 1-2 minutes, to minimize the risk of hypotension. Rapid administration can cause profound hypotension and potentially fatal arrhythmias. Monitor blood pressure continuously during and after administration.
Hypotension Management
If hypotension occurs, immediately stop the infusion and place the patient in a Trendelenburg position. Administer intravenous fluids as needed to restore blood pressure and volume. Consider using vasopressors if fluid resuscitation is insufficient. Closely observe the patient for signs of shock.
Contraindications
Do not administer Lasix to patients with known hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulfonamide derivatives. Avoid Lasix in patients with severe dehydration, hypovolemia, or anuria (absence of urine production). Exercise extreme caution in patients with hepatic coma or severe electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypokalemia.
Other Important Precautions
Regularly monitor serum electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magnesium) and creatinine levels during and after Lasix administration. Assess renal function before administering Lasix, particularly in patients with pre-existing renal impairment. Be aware of potential drug interactions, such as those with digoxin or aminoglycosides, and adjust dosages appropriately.
