Interactions and Contraindications

Always inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins, before starting doxycycline. This includes antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, which can reduce doxycycline absorption. Simultaneous use with certain medications, such as warfarin (a blood thinner), may require dose adjustments. Doxycycline can increase the risk of photosensitivity, so limit sun exposure and use sunscreen. Dairy products may also decrease absorption; consume doxycycline with water.

Contraindications

Avoid doxycycline if you’re allergic to tetracyclines. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should generally avoid doxycycline, due to potential harm to the developing fetus or infant. Its use is also contraindicated in children under 8 years old, and individuals with liver or kidney disease should exercise caution and discuss its use with their doctor. Avoid using doxycycline if you have a known history of esophageal irritation.

Additional Precautions

Doxycycline can cause nausea and diarrhea. If you experience severe stomach upset or persistent diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately. It’s also important to drink plenty of fluids while taking doxycycline to prevent dehydration.
