Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications and supplements you take, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies, before starting aspirin therapy. This includes prescription drugs, vitamins, and minerals.
Medications Affected by Aspirin
Warfarin (Coumadin): Aspirin increases the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin, a blood thinner. Close monitoring of your INR (International Normalized Ratio) is necessary. Your doctor may adjust your warfarin dosage.
Methotrexate: Combining aspirin with methotrexate, a drug used to treat certain cancers and autoimmune diseases, can increase the risk of methotrexate’s side effects, particularly gastrointestinal issues. Close monitoring is recommended.
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Taking aspirin with other NSAIDs like ibuprofen or naproxen increases the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding. Consult your doctor before combining them.
Supplements to Consider
Ginkgo biloba: This herbal supplement can increase the risk of bleeding when combined with aspirin.
Garlic: Garlic has blood-thinning properties and can interact negatively with aspirin, increasing bleeding risk. Discuss this with your physician.
Vitamin E: High doses of Vitamin E can also increase bleeding risk when combined with aspirin.
Important Note
This information is not exhaustive. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist about potential drug interactions before taking aspirin, particularly if you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking other medications.
