Precautions and Contraindications for Accutane Use

Before starting Accutane, inform your dermatologist about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Accutane interacts with many medications, potentially causing serious side effects. Regular blood tests monitor liver function and lipid levels; these are crucial for safe treatment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Accutane causes severe birth defects. Women of childbearing age must use two reliable forms of contraception for one month before, during, and one month after treatment. Pregnancy tests are required before starting and monthly throughout treatment. Breastfeeding is contraindicated during Accutane use.

Other Precautions

Accutane increases sun sensitivity; use a high SPF sunscreen daily. Dry skin and lips are common; use a moisturizer regularly. Avoid waxing or laser hair removal during treatment. Report any vision changes, severe headaches, or unusual muscle pain immediately to your doctor. Depression and suicidal thoughts are potential side effects; seek help immediately if these occur.

Contraindications

Accutane is contraindicated for individuals with severe liver disease, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, uncontrolled diabetes, and those allergic to isotretinoin or its components. Concurrent use with tetracyclines is also contraindicated. Avoid donating blood during treatment and for one month afterward.
