Always verify the physician’s order against the patient’s medical record. Double-check the medication, dosage, and route of administration.
Next, gather necessary supplies: Decadron vial, appropriate IV fluid (usually normal saline or dextrose), IV administration set, alcohol swabs, gloves, sharps container, and patient’s medical record.
- Prepare the IV site using appropriate antiseptic technique. This involves cleaning the area with an alcohol swab in a circular motion, moving outwards from the center. Insert the IV catheter using sterile technique. Ensure proper insertion depth and secure the catheter with tape. Carefully draw the prescribed dose of Decadron into the syringe, using aseptic technique. Flush the IV tubing with the chosen IV fluid before administering the medication. Administer Decadron slowly over the recommended infusion time, monitoring the patient closely for any adverse reactions. Never administer faster than the recommended rate. Observe the infusion site regularly for infiltration or extravasation. If any occur, stop the infusion immediately.
After administration, flush the IV line with the appropriate fluid. Dispose of all used materials properly. Document the medication administration, including time, dose, and route, along with any patient observations. Monitor the patient for side effects post-administration which might include increased blood sugar, increased appetite, fluid retention, and mood changes. Report any unusual reactions to the physician.
Always adhere to hospital protocols and follow standard aseptic techniques throughout the entire process. Patient safety and accurate administration are paramount.
