Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, is a common condition affecting men as they age. The prostate gland, located below the bladder, surrounds the urethra – the tube that carries urine from the bladder. As the prostate grows, it can squeeze the urethra, causing urinary problems.
Common BPH Symptoms
Many men experience symptoms like frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia). You might also find yourself needing to urinate urgently, experiencing a weak or interrupted urine stream, or feeling like your bladder isn’t completely empty after urination. Some men notice a hesitancy to start urination or even straining to urinate. These symptoms vary in severity, and some men may not experience any problems at all.
Less Common, but Important Symptoms
While less frequent, it’s important to be aware of potential complications. These include urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder stones, and even kidney damage due to obstructed urine flow. If you experience blood in your urine (hematuria), this requires immediate medical attention. Pain during urination (dysuria) is another symptom warranting prompt consultation with a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and management are key to preventing these complications.
