Administering Amoxicillin to Your Small Dog: Methods and Precautions

Always follow your vet’s instructions precisely. The dosage depends on your dog’s weight and the specific formulation of amoxicillin prescribed.

Oral Administration

Most commonly, amoxicillin for dogs comes as a liquid suspension or chewable tablets. For liquid medication:

Use a medication syringe for accurate dosing. Never use a household spoon. Gently place the syringe between your dog’s cheek and gums, dispensing the medicine slowly. Reward your dog with a small treat immediately afterward to create a positive association.

For tablets:

If your dog readily takes pills, you can hide them in a small amount of high-value food, like peanut butter (ensure it’s xylitol-free!). Alternatively, carefully place the tablet directly in the back of your dog’s mouth and gently close their mouth until they swallow.

Precautions

Monitor your dog for any adverse reactions, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you observe any unusual symptoms.

Storage

Store amoxicillin as directed on the label, usually in a cool, dry place. Discard any leftover medication after the prescribed course is finished.

Specific Considerations for Small Dogs

Small dogs are particularly sensitive to medication. Incorrect dosage can be dangerous. Always double-check the dosage with your veterinarian before administering amoxicillin, and be prepared to closely monitor your dog’s response.

Never Self-Medicate

Amoxicillin should only be given to your dog under veterinary supervision. Never attempt to treat your dog without professional guidance.
