Aleve vs. Other Anti-Inflammatory Medications: When to Choose Aleve

Choose Aleve (naproxen sodium) for mild to moderate pain and inflammation, such as headaches, menstrual cramps, or arthritis pain. Its longer duration of action – up to 12 hours – provides sustained relief compared to some other options.

Consider Aleve if: you need longer-lasting pain relief than ibuprofen offers, and you tolerate NSAIDs well. Naproxen’s anti-inflammatory effects may be more beneficial for conditions like arthritis than simple analgesics like acetaminophen (Tylenol).

However, Aleve is not suitable for everyone. Avoid Aleve if you have a history of stomach ulcers, heart conditions, kidney problems, or allergies to NSAIDs. Always consult your doctor before starting any new medication, particularly if you are taking other drugs.

Compared to ibuprofen: Aleve provides longer-lasting pain relief. Ibuprofen’s effects usually last only four to six hours, requiring more frequent doses. Both are NSAIDs, carrying similar potential side effects such as stomach upset.

Compared to acetaminophen: Aleve effectively treats inflammation; acetaminophen only addresses pain and fever. This makes Aleve the better choice for inflammatory conditions like arthritis. However, acetaminophen is often preferred for fever reduction due to a lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
