Furosemide, or Lasix, interacts significantly with several medications. Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Caution is advised with:
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics (e. g., gentamicin, tobramycin): Increased risk of ototoxicity (hearing damage). Lithium: Furosemide can increase lithium levels, leading to toxicity. Close monitoring of lithium levels is necessary. Digoxin: Furosemide may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity. Regular monitoring of digoxin levels is recommended. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs can reduce the effectiveness of furosemide. Antihypertensive medications: Combined use may cause excessive blood pressure lowering.
Contraindications: You should Not take furosemide if you:
- Have an allergy to furosemide or any of its ingredients. Have severe dehydration. Have anuria (absence of urine production). Have severe hepatic coma.
Specific Considerations:
Kidney Disease: Dosage adjustments are often required for patients with kidney impairment. Diabetes: Furosemide can elevate blood glucose levels. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before taking furosemide during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Electrolyte Imbalances: Furosemide can cause electrolyte imbalances (low potassium, sodium, magnesium, or calcium). Regular monitoring of electrolytes is important, particularly in high-risk patients.
