Managing Oral Side Effects During Accutane Treatment

Schedule regular dental checkups. See your dentist every 3-6 months during treatment to monitor for any issues.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Consider using a fluoride mouthwash to further strengthen your enamel. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth hydrated.

Address dryness promptly. Accutane can cause dry mouth. Use sugar-free gum or candy to stimulate saliva production, or try a saliva substitute your dentist may recommend.

Managing Other Potential Issues

Bleeding Gums: If you experience bleeding gums, gently brush and floss, and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. If bleeding persists, see your dentist. Soreness/Ulcers: Rinse your mouth with a warm salt water solution (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of warm water). Avoid irritating foods. Changes in Taste/Smell: These are temporary side effects; they should resolve once you complete your Accutane course.

Communication is Key

Openly discuss any oral concerns with your dermatologist and dentist. They can provide tailored advice and address potential problems quickly. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes.

Dietary Considerations

Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and calcium for optimal oral health. Limit sugary drinks and snacks to minimize tooth decay.
