Preventing Future UTIs

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Aim for at least eight glasses to flush out bacteria.

Urinate frequently. Don’t hold your urine for extended periods. Empty your bladder completely after urination.

Wipe front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from spreading to the urethra. Consider cranberry supplements or cranberry juice. Some studies suggest they may help prevent UTIs, though results vary.

Practice good hygiene. Wash your genital area with mild soap and water before and after sex. Avoid using scented soaps or douches.

Empty your bladder immediately before and after sexual intercourse. If you’re sexually active, consider using condoms to reduce the risk of infection.

Wear breathable cotton underwear. Avoid tight-fitting clothing that can trap moisture.

After bowel movements, clean thoroughly. This helps minimize bacterial transfer to the urethra.

If you experience recurring UTIs, discuss preventive strategies with your doctor. They may recommend long-term antibiotic prophylaxis or other options.

Stay hydrated, especially during exercise and hot weather. Adequate hydration supports urinary tract health.
