Recognizing Signs and Symptoms of Infection While on Prednisone

Prednisone weakens your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. Therefore, pay close attention to your body. Fever, even a low-grade one (above 100.4°F or 38°C), warrants immediate medical attention. Don’t dismiss it as “just a little fever.”

Monitor for changes in your existing health conditions. A worsening cough, increased shortness of breath, or intensified pain at an infection site need prompt evaluation. These signs might indicate your body’s struggling to fight off an infection.

Watch for new symptoms. These might include sore throat, fatigue exceeding normal levels for you, muscle aches, diarrhea, or unusual skin rashes or lesions. These could be early indicators of an infection gaining ground.

Pay close attention to any unusual discharge, especially from wounds or body openings. This is a clear sign of potential infection and requires medical consultation. Purulent (pus-filled) discharge demands immediate attention.

Chills and sweats, particularly night sweats, are other warning signs to watch for. These frequently accompany infections and are especially important to report if you’re already feeling unwell.

Remember: Early detection is key. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms while taking prednisone. Don’t hesitate to seek medical advice–your health is paramount.
