Side Effects and Potential Drug Interactions

Acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir generally cause mild side effects. Common complaints include headache, nausea, and diarrhea. However, serious reactions are rare.

Acyclovir sometimes leads to kidney problems, especially with high doses or intravenous administration. Patients with pre-existing kidney issues need close monitoring. Intravenous acyclovir can also cause neurotoxicity, manifested as confusion, hallucinations, or seizures.

Famciclovir side effects are usually less frequent than with acyclovir. However, similar to acyclovir, kidney problems are a possibility. Proper hydration is crucial to mitigate this risk.

Valacyclovir typically shows the fewest side effects. Like the others, kidney issues remain a concern, particularly in individuals with pre-existing renal impairment. Always inform your doctor about any kidney problems.

These medications can interact with other drugs. Probenecid, for instance, increases the levels of acyclovir and its related drugs in the body, potentially enhancing side effects. Mycophenolate mofetil, an immunosuppressant, may also interact, possibly reducing its effectiveness. Discuss all your current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, with your doctor before starting treatment.
