Side Effects of Flagyl and Cipro: Monitoring and Management

Regularly monitor yourself for common side effects. Metronidazole (Flagyl) can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a metallic taste in your mouth. Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) may lead to diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and headache. Report any severe or persistent symptoms to your doctor immediately.

Gastrointestinal Issues

For diarrhea, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Consider probiotics to restore gut flora. Severe or bloody diarrhea requires immediate medical attention, as it might indicate *Clostridium difficile* infection (C. diff). Avoid alcohol while taking Flagyl, as it can exacerbate side effects.

Other Side Effects

Cipro can cause tendonitis or tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those taking corticosteroids. Report any joint pain or swelling. Both medications can affect your liver. Monitor for jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) or unusual fatigue. Flagyl can cause a decreased white blood cell count, increasing infection risk. If you experience fever or signs of infection, seek medical attention.

Medication Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking. Interactions with other drugs are possible. This includes over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal remedies. Your doctor can adjust dosages or suggest alternatives to minimize potential risks.
